The Kichaka team has taken it up on themselves to use this period to review Maastricht’s coffee spots in terms of their coffee and the ability to work while enjoying that cup of coffee. It might not be obvious where the distinction between obvious and obscure lays, however, while the first section advertises with free WiFi and good working spaces, the later does so reluctantly or unknowingly. The Obvious UM Inner City Library Grote Looierstraat 17, 6211 JH Maastricht
Monday-Sunday 08:30-22:00 (24:00 in exam periods) Hahaha… as if. Don’t even get me started on this one. It most certainly has coffee, but unless it is the first week of project period, don’t expect to relax even for a second. Centre Ceramique Avenue Ceramique 50, 6221 KV Maastricht
Tue: 9am - 9pm, We/ Thu/ Fri: 9am - 6pm, Saturday & Sunday: 1pm - 5pm Studying at the top floor watching the sunset is the nicest time to be there. The after glow of the sun gives you an extra motivation to finish your work and go home. Good coffee of course and the university free wifi. Coffeelovers (several locations)
As long as you are close to any Coffeelovers, your coffee cravings will be satisfied. My most enjoyable place to study is at the SSC because its close to my place and the coffee is truly the nicest. Naturally avoidable during exam period though! KOFFIE big Joost en Maartje Maastrichter Heidenstraat 8, 6221HV Maastricht
Tuesday-Saturday 08:00-18:00, Sunday 09:00-17:00 For those of you, who used KOFFIE as their go-to work and coffee spot, beware they have a change of policy this year! Working on a laptop is no longer allowed in the front area, left are only the big tables in the back. If that does not deter you, go ahead, it’s still a great spot for a coffee fix while still getting work done! Take 5 Bredestraat 14, 6211 HC Maastricht
Monday-Thursday 09:00-02:00, Friday-Saturday 09.00-03:00, Sunday 11:00-02:00 While Take 5 is already a go-to spot for cheap Gin Tonics, you’ll find the place deserted before 8pm. They have a bunch of tables and free WiFi, yet it is a little dark and even though their focus is on drinks you will find a perfectly working coffee machine at your disposal. De Brandweer Capucijnenstraat 21, 6211 RN Maastricht
Tuesday - Sunday 09:00-02:00 De Brandweer is always a cosy environment to study in. The staff are excellent and you can always enjoy coffee. The wifi is always a bit shifty but that helps if you need to get through reading papers and stop procrastinating on Facebook. Soup Solo Sint Servaasklooster 38, 6211 TE Maastricht
Monday - Friday 11:-00-17:00 The owner is extremely friendly, the atmosphere peaceful if you go to study at random times (not lunch time because you will be prone to listening to the most inane conversations that take place), recommended to go in the mornings or late afternoon. The coffee is good but of course the soup is better ;) The InnBetween Capucijnenstraat 122, 6211 RT Maastricht During exam week, The InnBetween offers quiet study places with a chill atmosphere, you can make your own tea and coffee for free and enjoy the couches on a study break, because of their limited spaces it does not become a social gathering. Serious studying can be done here. The Obscure V&D Rooftop Grote Straat 5, 6221 CT, Maastricht Since V&D has filed for bankruptcy, this admittedly awesome coffee spot is probably a thing of the past. We’ll just have to see what comes after. Toneelacademie Lenculenstraat 31-33, 6221 KP Maastricht If you find your way through the basement area of the Toneelacademie, a little cafeteria with an outside area awaits out back. While personally I have never had coffee there, it’s nice to sit out in the sun and check out artsy students outside the international UM bubble. Jan van Eyck Academie Academieplein 1, 6211 KM Maastricht Monday-Friday 09:00-18:00 The Jan Van Eyck Academie has lots of tables in a vast and light open space. Next to good coffee you can get the famed Cato by Cato food there around lunch time. Beware that none of people working there will receive a prize in speediness and efficiency any time soon, though. Derlon Maastricht Onze Lieve Vrouweplein 6, 6211 HD Maastricht Enjoy some chill jazz and live music downstairs at Derlon on OLV. Nice to study alone and enjoy your cup of coffee. Coffeeshop Club 69 Grote Gracht 97, 6211 SV Maastricht The ideal place to study when you need to get creative and zone out with your headphones. Nice coffee served, amongst other things. You would be surprised by the amount of networking that can be done at coffeeshops as well. The Fave … that’s left for you to decide, really.
